Am I eligible for this clinical audit?
If you have been in practice for at least six months, keep patient health records, and are a COCA member, you are eligible. No previous experience with clinical audit is required. You can download the audit materials from the ‘link below’ and get started immediately. Alternatively, write to COCA (at COCA - Clinical Audit, P.O. Box 1010 Ringwood, Victoria. 3134) and request a copy of the instructions and data collection forms and they will be posted to you.
How much time is required to carry out this clinical audit?
The data collection should take no more than an hour. If your record keeping is systematic, clear, and legible, you may have your receptionist collect the data for you.
A report comparing your results with those of other audit participants will be sent to you. This will provide benchmarks you may wish to use in order to decide whether your records meet a reasonable standard. Of course, you may wish to ignore these benchmarks and aim for a higher quality standard.
Once you have this report, any action you may take to improve your record keeping is up to you. The most time-consuming element of any clinical audit project is the implementation of changes to your practice.
If you decide to make changes, you can use the materials provided in this audit to re-audit at a later date to see if your changes have been successful. You will be able to carry this out on your own.
Will I remain anonymous?
Most definitely YES! This audit will be carried out on a confidential basis. Once your report has been sent to you, and your CE points have been awarded, your results will be pooled with those of other audit participants, and your data collection sheet will be destroyed. No patient records will be seen by COCA so patient confidentiality is not an issue.
Can I fail this clinical audit?
There is no “fail” or grading system. If you send in complete data collection forms, you will receive your report and CE points. If your forms are incomplete, you will be asked to complete them. You can’t lose!
